Red River, NM

I arrived at the RV camp ground just a few hours after dark. The drive over Bobcat Pass was long and snowy. The night sky was partially overcast, snow was falling and Osirus shown through a gap in the coulds. I parked my truck at lot #8 and prepared my bed. I had to move alot of boxes around to make room. Finaly I got it all set up and then, there was nothing to do. It was too early to go to bed. I sat quietly and begain to reflect on my recent trip to Mississippi. I got out a note book and begain to write. It was a nessicary release. I had some pent up frustrations that I needed to get out. I said my evening prayers and proceded to go to sleep.

The next morning it was bright and sunny.  I got out the skillet and begain to cook up some eggs and toast. After a satifying breakfeast I packed up camp and begain my drive up to The Enchanted Forrest XC Ski Restort. On my way I was stoped by a man hiking down the road. I immedatly assumed that he had run off the road. Upon conversing my suspicions were confirmed and I gave him a lift back up the mountian. After some pulling and tuging with a tow strap. We managed to get his truck out of the ditch and back on the road.

The man’s  name was Blair. He is a medical physician from Albiqurkey, NM. Like myslef, Blair was looking to do some Snow-showing at the Enchanted Forrest. Appartetly the Ski Resort was closed dute to a recent Mountian Storm. One-hundred mile an hour winds tore trough the forrest and fell thousands of trees. Bound and determined to get out in the snow. Blair and I made our way to the abandoned resort and began our march into the forrest. The going was tough. The snow was deep and soft. Often we stopped to rest and drink water.

We navigated around and over many fallen trees. However, we reached a point where we could no longer proceed. We turned around and begain to make our way back down the trail. After going a hundred yards we spotted three deer in the woods. A nanny, a faun, and a buck. Their fur was hazelnut and dark gray. The Buck stood like a mighty king, content and composed. His antlers were tall and broad. I managed to take a few photos of him.

That night a big snow storm came through the region. All night the snow came down in great wet pellets. The next morning I drove out to Goose Creek Trail to do some exploring. This time I decided to leave the cameras in the truck and to just take in the beauty of the winter landscape. Snow cloulds loomed in the air. I prayed that Apollo would show his face today.

The going was tough. I marched thorugh deep drifts of snow. Sometimes my ski poles would punch down twenty-four inches or more. I had to stop every 30 yards to catch my breath. I keept telling myself that going back down will be much easier. What, with gravity on my side and a path cut through the drifts. Finaly exhaustion got the best of me. I stopped to take in the view before heading back down. Pine needles russled in the wind. The sun shown upon the hillside. Everything about the forest was quiet and tranquil. There were no animals in sight but I occasionaly heard small birds chirping in the brush.

That night I visited the Red River Brewery to treate myself to Beer and BBQ. The House Made Octoberfest was rich and flavorfull. The Brisquet was tender and jucy. I broke out the old laptop and begain to write about the prevous days experience.

Red River is a small town full of charm. Every where I meet freindly people who are passonate about the outdoors. The atomosphere is joyfull. I laughed and conversed with fellow tourist and shop workers alike. People come here to have a good time, and that is exactly what they get.
